California Life Sciences: Improving Patient Care

New medicines save lives, benefitting patients, the healthcare system and our overall economy. In the last century, innovative therapies have extended average lifespan from 58 to 79 and improved health and quality-of-life.

Innovations within the life sciences industry have a tremendous impact on the world’s health and well-being. California has an exception history of producing thousands of new, advanced therapies and technologies designed to treat diabetes, cancer, the immune system and central nervous system disorders, to name a few.

In 2016, California companies were shepherding 1,269 new drugs through the product development pipeline. These included 404 to treat cancer; 134 for infectious diseases.

In 2015, nearly 300 new medical devices created by California companies were approved by the FDA to improve patient health and well-being.

Not only does the sector improve patient care, it drives economic growth. Premier research institutions combine with a unique entrepreneurial spirit to develop new technologies, attract investors and push the state’s economy to greater heights.

Academic excellence, forward-thinking public policy and the commitment of our dedicated entrepreneurs and business leaders has translated into new ways to address some of the world’s most severe medical conditions.

By working together to improve public policy, we can accelerate the pace of innovation and reduce barriers that impinge patients’ access to important new medicines and technologies.
